Nuclear power is unsafe, creates massive deadly waste, is very scary and should be banned.
As anyone with even a splinter of intelligence who has lived on Earth for the past 50 years will tell you, nuclear energy technology is one of the worst creations in human history. It is not only unsafe to develop and use, it is also wasteful and has the potential to be used for evil purposes. Even setting aside the first set of concerns, it is the prevailing enlightened view that all technologies that have the potential for evil use should be banned.
It is not my intention to break new ground in this brief discussion. That is not necessary. Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, the guy that dropped the screwdriver in the 40’s…we’re all pretty familiar with the disasters.
I’ve long informed others in many blog posts and comments on the completely untenable problem of what to do with nuclear waste. We inherently know that radiation is very bad. And no discussion should occur without acknowledging the checkered history of nuclear technology, which is directly tied to the first and second World Wars, setting in motion a long era of connecting nuclear fission to weapons and the mass destruction of the human race.
It is with this as the foundation that I’ve invited Massive BS Expert (unaccredited) The Other Dave Johnston to answer a few questions for me on the issue and to confirm how the science on nuclear power is settled.
We will explore the idea of moving toward a complete ban on the technology and ending the Nuclear Age forever.
Nuclear energy is unsafe to develop, manufacture, and operate.
“Is that a question? That appears to be a statement.”
Just answer it, please.
“Actually, from 1970 - 1992 there were 31 total deaths associated with nuclear power. Contrast that with 6,400 deaths for coal, 4,000 deaths for hydroelectric, and 1,200 for natural gas.”
This country cannot afford another disaster like Three Mile Island.
“Zero deaths. I think you might be referring to The China Syndrome, which is a movie that came out just days before what happened at Three Mile Island.
In that film it was stated that a nuclear reactor accident would wipe out the entire state of Pennsylvania. That scared a lot of people at almost the exact moment in time, but in fact you would be hard pressed to attribute a single injury or health effect to the actual incident.
Three Mile Island ends up being a good example of a well-contained failure, as despite the facility experiencing a core meltdown, the reactor vessel itself maintained its integrity. The average level of radiation exposure as a result of the incident was about 8 millirem, which is roughly equivalent to a single x-ray at your local clinic. And you can compare that number to the 10-20 millirem of radiation the human body naturally produces on its own from potassium-40.”
Chernobyl, how do you justify Chernobyl?
“You don’t. It was a bad accident. But note that we are talking about a reactor in the struggling Communist-era Soviet Union. Poorly designed facility and shoddy, with only partial containment. Have you seen Soviet era automobiles? And placed into the context of coal mining accidents it takes on a different view.”
We don’t know what to do with the waste. Nobody wants anything to do with deadly radioactive waste.
“France generates nearly 80% of its electricity from nuclear power and recycles the majority. You can recover more than 90% of the energy from spent nuclear fuel and use it again. This is already happening. The “waste” left over is stored and is reduced to a fraction of one percent of its original radioactivity within 40 years.”
See, there you go. You still have radiation. This is all so unnatural, ultimately.
“Radiation itself couldn’t be more natural. We live on a gigantic nuclear plant called Earth. We’re talking uranium here. Minerals. All fossil fuels contain radioactive isotopes. The human body produces radiation. We use radiation to heat Hot Pockets. Even burning coal produces radiation. Using nuclear technology to refocus energy for productive use is merely humans attempting to control the process at some point. To take it one step further, everything humans attempt to do with science is fundamentally natural, because humans are part of that system.”
France? Really? You’re going to use France as an example?
“France has the cleanest air in the industrialized world. They’re not burning much coal, and they’re using very little oil. We’re talking real air pollution here, sulfur, heavy metals, and thick particulates that the US was very concerned about before the term global warming ever surfaced.
The WHO estimates that nearly 3 million people die every year from causes related to ‘old school’ air pollution. Nuclear power releases water vapor and heat, and not much else.
France also has the cheapest electricity in Europe, with so much excess that they export much of it, so…”
Nuclear war. Boom. Weapons. You have nothing for that one.
“I actually do. See: Horse, already left the barn.
Weapons come in all shapes and sizes. As does human tragedy and error.
About 40,000 people die each year in the Unites States in car crashes. An additional 5,800 die in the popular, but vague category “Work Related.” Knife deaths far outnumber nuclear disaster fatalities.
We should probably consider banning cars, knives, and even work. We will live in a bountiful paradise of safety.”
You’re not coming off as clever to me, but I thank you for joining me today regardless.
While he made a few salient points during our discussion, I remain unconvinced.
The Other Dave Johnston’s primary argument was that nuclear power was more safe and much better for a Green planet than coal, oil, or other fossil fuels in delivering sustainable energy, while still allowing a high quality of human life. But his major point was scored by using France as an example. This ultimately falls flat to me.
All the French do is sit around in cafes all day, eat good food, chat, and enjoy the simple things in life. Ridiculous.
